Rubio follows Kissinger's path: Dual role in Trump's cabinet

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to replace Mike Waltz as the president's national security adviser, reports Politico. Rubio will permanently combine these roles, a scenario that has occurred only once before.

Marco Rubio's promotion is connected to Trump's decision. On Thursday, the US President announced that Mike Waltz, who has until now served as the national security adviser, will become the United States ambassador to the UN.

According to Politico, initial agreements suggest that Rubio will combine the roles of Secretary of State and national security adviser for at least six months. However, some sources in the White House insist that Trump would like this to be a permanent, not temporary, solution.

Rubio did not seek such a promotion. However, he has been encouraged to take "fuller control" of the foreign policy apparatus by Donald Trump himself and his chief of staff, Susie Wiles.

According to one of the senior White House officials, Rubio is seen as a classic team player who is willing to take on any assignment for the president, including those that are challenging or carry significant risk.

A powerful man of Trump. Rubio to assume a new role

Informants from Politico report that Rubio's task in his new role is to "reorient" the American National Security Council so that it fully reflects the president's vision.

The Secretary of State is considered ideally qualified for the role, as he has a strong grasp of both the procedural aspects and foreign policy, and is known for his effective collaboration with the entire team.

Additionally, Rubio is regarded as highly loyal—an attribute that many of Trump’s allies view as one of his most significant strengths. Politico recalls that after assuming the role of Secretary of State, Rubio changed his stance on many issues. He previously supported Ukraine and was cautious about the idea of mass deportations of illegal migrants. Currently, on both these issues, he fully shares Trump's stance.

Trump appreciates Rubio. Wants him to be like Kissinger

To date, the only person to combine the roles of Secretary of State and national security adviser was Henry Kissinger. This dual role was entrusted to him by President Richard Nixon, who governed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Politico recalls that this is partly why Kissinger is now seen as one of the most powerful advisers to the US President in history.
