Rüdiger's suspension adds to Real Madrid's defensive woes
The Real Madrid defender, Antonio Rüdiger, has been suspended for six matches for improper conduct during the Spanish Cup final against Barcelona. He threw an ice cube towards the referee and made aggressive gestures. Consequently, Real Madrid is facing serious defensive troubles.
Antonio Rüdiger, a Real Madrid player, was handed a six-match suspension following an incident during the Spanish Cup final against Barcelona. During the match, which concluded with a 2-3 defeat for Real after extra time, Rüdiger threw an ice cube towards the referee and made aggressive gestures.
During the thrilling final, three Real Madrid players received red cards. Besides Rüdiger, the players were Jude Bellingham and Lucas Vázquez. The Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided to cancel Bellingham's red card, while Vázquez has been suspended for two matches in next season's Copa del Rey, reports the ESPN.
Rüdiger's behaviour was deemed the most shocking. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea noted in his report that the player threw an object from the team's bench area. The German attempted to approach the referee but was restrained by teammates and coaching staff.
According to the RFEF disciplinary code, Rüdiger was penalised for "mild violence towards the referees", resulting in a suspension ranging from four to 12 matches. Ultimately, a six-match suspension was decided upon.
Rüdiger admitted his guilt and apologised for his behaviour. "There is no excuse for my behaviour last night. I am very sorry for it. We played very well from the second half on. After 111 minutes, I was no longer able to help my team, and before the final whistle, I made a mistake. Once again, I apologise to the referee and to everyone I let down last night," he wrote on Instagram.
The defender also underwent knee surgery, ruling him out for a few weeks. As a result, he will not play again this season and will likely miss the Club World Cup in the United States. Meanwhile, Real Madrid is facing serious defensive troubles. Eder Militao was previously sidelined, and in recent days David Alaba has been too. There's also an issue on the flanks, with injuries affecting Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy.
