Russia prepares to withdraw troops from destabilised Syria
Russian soldiers are likely preparing to evacuate their military bases in Syria, according to satellite data from Maxar Technologies.
American company Maxar Technologies, specialising in satellite photography, has provided evidence that Russian soldiers may be preparing to leave Syria. Satellite images show two Russian AN-124 aircraft at the Humaymim airbase in Syria, with open nose cones, suggesting preparations for loading equipment.
Preparations for withdrawal
Maxar reported that a Ka-52 attack helicopter is being dismantled nearby, which is likely being prepared for transport. Similarly, elements of the S-400 air defence unit are ready to leave the base.
Simultaneously, the British Channel 4 reports on a convoy of over 150 Russian military vehicles, which passed through rebel-occupied areas without hindrance. This may indicate an agreement between the Kremlin and the new authorities in Syria, allowing Russians to leave the country peacefully.
Political changes in Syria
The Russian Ministry of Defence has not commented on these reports. On Sunday, Syrian rebels overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad, which had been maintained for years with Russian support. Russia had invested significant resources in Syria, and its bases were crucial for influence in the region.
The rebellion in Syria, led by the organisation Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, is conducting rapid offensive actions against the government of Bashar al-Assad, capturing strategic cities such as Aleppo and Hama.
