Russian firm takes over Ericsson brand amid market exit
The Russian company "Ruskliemat" registered the trademark Ericsson after the Swedish manufacturer left Russia. This marks the first instance in the country where a foreign brand has been transferred to a local company. Rospatent approved the registration on 12th March 2025.
The Russian company "Ruskliemat" took over the Ericsson trademark, the first such case in Russia. According to "Kommersant," Rospatent registered the brand for "Ruskliemat" on 12th March 2025. This decision was made because the Swedish manufacturer exited the Russian market following the onset of the conflict in Ukraine.
The Ericsson trademark was registered in clothing, footwear, and headgear. In October 2024, the court sided with "Ruskliemat" concerning removing the legal protection of the Ericsson brand.
According to "Kommersant," the company plans to use the brand in a foreign partner's interest.
Will Starbucks face a similar fate?
Experts predict similar situations could affect other foreign brands, such as Starbucks. The three-year legal protection period for trademarks will end in 2025, potentially leading to further takeovers by Russian companies.
"Kommersant" highlights that such actions could become common in the near future.
