Russian forces intensify offensive, threaten key Donetsk cities
Russian troops are intensifying attacks in the Donetsk region, threatening key cities. Military expert Ivan Stupak says the objective is not just to capture a single small town but to carry out a strategic operation that conserves resources and forces.
Russian forces are increasing their activities in the Donetsk region, posing threats to cities such as Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Toretsk, and Chasiv Yar. Pokrovsk remains a primary target. Military expert Ivan Stupak highlights that Russia's aim is not solely to capture individual cities but to preserve resources and forces strategically.
In early January, platoon commander Stanislav Buniatov reported a breakthrough in the Ukrainian defence in the Lyman sector. Ivan Stupak, a Ukrainian military expert, mentions that the situation is challenging but urges caution against premature conclusions. He notes, "We have had instances where the Russians seemingly broke through or even advanced towards Lyman. However, within a few days, their efforts were thwarted, and it ended there," he says in an interview with Zaborona.com.
The Russians are avoiding frontal assaults and are attempting to outflank Ukrainian positions, which could potentially encircle the defenders.
Despite heavy losses, Russia continues to advance
According to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War, on 7 January, at least 71% of the territory of Toretsk was occupied by Russian troops. The Operational-Strategic Group "Chortyca" reported attacks on Ukrainian positions in Chasiv Yar and Toretsk. "Some of our positions were destroyed due to enemy attacks and shelling," the statement reports.
Military expert Pavlo Lakiychuk warns that if the Russians reach the road connecting Pokrovsk with Pavlohrad, it will pose challenges for the defence of Pokrovsk and the entire group northeast of the city. "The enemy is also attempting to advance towards this road from Vozdvyzhenka, which would isolate us from Kostiantynivka," he explains. However, the Russian army is sustaining heavy casualties, losing an average of about 400 soldiers daily in attempts to capture Pokrovsk.
"There is a high likelihood that this will be a Pyrrhic victory for the Russians," he assesses.
