Russian Shahed-136 drones have been equipped with these new 90 kg warheads, which are manufactured in Russia and Iran (the origin of the Shaheds). These new warheads replace the previous 50 kg versions, enhancing their effectiveness. The updated warheads feature combined cumulative, fragmentation, blast, and incendiary effects, as reported.

New technologies in Shahed-136 drones

The new Russian warhead, designated KOFZBCh, employs the explosive material TGF-35P2 (a mix of TNT and desensitised RDX), which remains unchanged from older variants, allowing it to reach a combustion temperature of up to 3500 degrees Celsius.

Cooperation between Russia and Iran

The collaboration between Moscow and Tehran in the production of Shahed-136 drones is extensive, even though these drones are manufactured in Russia at two sites. The new warheads mark another step in the modernisation of these devices, which are constantly being enhanced in terms of technology and tactical use. Russia continuously updates its drones, including satellite navigation systems, to improve their resistance to interference. Furthermore, the Russians plan to boost the production of Shahed drones.

It is noteworthy that Shahed-136 drones are distinguished by their unique delta-shaped wings, which measure approximately 3.4 metres in length and have a wingspan of 2.4 metres. These unmanned aerial vehicles can carry combat loads of up to 40 kg. Powered by the Limbach L550E engine, these drones can achieve a maximum speed of roughly 185 km/h. This specification renders them effective in a variety of military operations.
