Russian jet transfer to North Korea: Implications unravel

Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific, stated that the Russians are set to transfer MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter jets to North Korea in exchange for military assistance in Ukraine. Pyongyang may also receive ballistic missiles, submarines, and air defence technologies.

Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum, Admiral Samuel Paparo discussed the potential transfer of Russian MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter aircraft to North Korea. However, he did not specify the number of aircraft involved. This decision follows the deployment of 12,000 North Korean soldiers to Ukraine to support the Russian army. According to Paparo, the soldiers are not actively engaged in combat but are positioned within the combat zone.

In his view, North Korea likely anticipates further support from Russia. Paparo mentioned technologies related to ballistic missiles, submarines, and air defence. Acquiring these would considerably enhance Pyongyang's military standing in the region. The commander of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific also noted that while the ageing MiG-29 and Su-27 are not new fifth-generation fighters, they remain "formidable" machines. What is known about them?

The MiG-29, also known as the "Fulcrum," is one of the most renowned Soviet multi-role fighters introduced in the 1980s. This aircraft has two Klimov RD-33 engines, allowing for a top speed of approximately 2,400 km/h. Its operational range is up to 1,500 km, and its operational ceiling is about 18,000 metres.

The MiG-29 is noted for high manoeuvrability and is primarily used for air defence and air support missions. It can also undertake assault operations, capable of carrying various types of armaments, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.

The Su-27, often called the "Flanker," is another prominent Soviet-designed fighter built for air superiority and primarily used for intercepting and engaging enemy aircraft. It is famed for its excellent manoeuvrability and ability to operate at high altitudes. The Su-27 reaches a maximum speed of 2,500 km/h and has a range exceeding 3,000 km with additional fuel tanks. Its extensive operational range and manoeuvrability make it well-suited for long-distance defensive and offensive missions.
