Sanders compared billionaires to "heroin addicts," noting that their "drug" is greed. Sanders stated that the wealthy constantly seek more, showing no concern for who they have to crush to gain another billion dollars.
During the rally, Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez emphasised that billionaires from both political parties, both Republicans and Democrats, contribute to the weakening of democracy. Ocasio-Cortez noted that the current situation is "oligarchy in America," with the concentration of power and corruption being its main traits.
Sanders recalled that during Trump's inauguration, the wealthiest people in the country were present, including Musk, Bezos, and Zuckerberg. Sanders remarked that the current situation reflects a system dominated by billionaires, pointing to the presence of 13 billionaires in Trump's cabinet
Ocasio-Cortez called on rally participants to take action, emphasising that it is the people, not institutions, that are the last line of defence of democracy. She declared that the people of Idaho are the guardians of the nation’s freedoms. She underscored that choosing democracy, freedom, and justice means fighting against the influence of big money.
Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez appealed for organising against the oligarchy and emphasised that only mass actions can bring change. Ocasio-Cortez urged people to unite in order to overcome the power of the oligarchy.
In the last elections, Sanders was re-elected to the Senate, defeating Republican Gerald Malloy, and will represent the state of Vermont for the fourth time.
