Syria celebrates as regime collapses in Damascus uprising
The news of the likely overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in various cities across Syria has sparked joy. People gather in the streets to celebrate the end of the dictator's rule. Just a few hours earlier, as rebels were seizing more territories, these same streets were deserted. Assad's forces offered no resistance.
Syrian rebels announced on Sunday in a televised statement the liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad after a 24-year reign. They later reported they are working on transferring power to a transitional body that will have full executive authority.
This information sparked euphoria in many places. People are celebrating, among others, in the centre of Damascus, which has been taken over by the rebels. Syrian refugees are also celebrating outside their homeland.
Opponents of Assad reported capturing Damascus without encountering resistance from government forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that the government army is withdrawing from Damascus airport. Reuters and CNN reported on the fighting in the city.
Overthrow in Syria. People are toppling monuments
Earlier there were reports that Bashar al-Assad left the capital on a plane that flew in an unknown direction.
There have also been recordings online showing the toppling of the monument of Hafez al-Assad, the previous president of Syria and father of Bashar al-Assad.
