TISZA edges past Fidesz in crucial Hungarian poll shift

In the latest IDEA poll examining support for political parties in Hungary, Viktor Orbán's party, Fidesz, is trailing in first place by 9%. The 45% result belongs to the TISZA party, which is led by Péter Magyar.

In recent months, polls in Hungary have increasingly indicated an advantage for the opposition TISZA party, led by Magyar, a former politician of the ruling Fidesz group, whose leader is Orbán. In some surveys, this lead amounts to a dozen or so percentage points.

The latest IDEA poll confirms this trend. The opposition TISZA party (45% support) has a 9 percentage point lead over the ruling Fidesz party (36% support).

The survey was commented on social media by Green MEP Daniel Freund, known for his firm stance towards Hungary. "Change is coming," he wrote concisely.

Will TISZA break Orbán's hegemony?

Dr Dominik Hejj, author of the book "Hungary Anew," assessed in an interview with PAP that Magyar is currently the best candidate for the Hungarian opposition. "He is the only person who knows how the system works and has the contacts that allow him to discredit it. He indeed steps in with a camera in places rife with irregularities, which the authorities would like to hide, such as hospitals or orphanages," he said in December.

The expert, however, cautioned that winning the elections is, for now, something for the future. "We must remember that after 2010, the electoral system in Hungary was changed several times, and each time the aim of these changes was to ensure Fidesz's victory in the elections. Viktor Orbán will do everything in his power not to relinquish power," the expert said.
