Tragic crossings: The Tisza River's deadly path from Ukraine to safety
The Tisza River flows between Ukraine and Romania. Those fleeing the war and mobilization attempt to cross it. However, not all of them reach their destination alive.
The border guard reports that instances of illegal border crossings are recorded almost daily in the vicinity of the Tisza River. According to Romanian authorities, since the start of the massive invasion by Russian forces into Ukraine, over six thousand individuals have crossed the Tisza River.
Not everyone has survived. Since the war began, at least 22 people have died in their efforts to reach the Romanian side across the river.
Deaths occur due to cold water, inferior-quality clothing, failure to notice obstacles, and the organizers' assurance of an "easy crossing."
Those attempting to cross the border on rubber boats, mattresses, or inflatable balloons are extremely determined. They wear life jackets and suits or wrap themselves in cling film to stay warm.
"Ukrainian Pravda" has observed that Ukrainians trying to evade mobilization fall prey to a lucrative business. They are advised on methods to cross the river for several thousand dollars.
Deception is a fundamental aspect of this deal. Clearly, the individual offering assistance takes the payment upfront without any guarantee of success. Sometimes the assurances given are: we have an arrangement with the border guard that you will be permitted to pass through the checkpoint. But when they arrive at the rendezvous point, the transporter simply shrugs his shoulders - the portal emphasizes.
An unusual case in Ukraine
A Ukrainian guard recounted a situation where a man, holding a military service deferment certificate for caring for a disabled person, attempted to cross the river.
As communicated by the border guard, the man sought advice from several individuals looking to profit from him. They convinced him that the deferment documents would not prevent his mobilization. Subsequently, the border guard filed a report on his attempt to cross the border. Later, he departed the country legally.
