Transform your burgers with homemade crispy fried onions

When preparing grilled dishes, many people focus on the specifics, primarily which meat to choose and how to marinate it. However, a successful meal is a composition of many ingredients, and even a small addition can make an outdoor lunch memorable for a long time.

If you want your grilled burgers to go down in history, think not only about fresh toppings and bold sauces but also about a crispy topping like fried onions. This addition can be bought in a shop, but I advise against it due to the artificial aroma and poor ingredients. The homemade version, although also prepared in deep oil, is slightly healthier and much tastier.

How to use fried onions?

I think that once you place a bowl of fried onions on the table, it'll quickly find its use. It's not a good idea to mix it with other ingredients, especially in a salad, because in this way, it may soften and stop being pleasantly crispy. This doesn't mean it's not a suitable addition to a salad for the grill.

You can certainly add it to young potatoes mixed with Greek yoghurt, pickled cucumber, or radishes. However, to prevent the onions from softening, wait until the very end or suggest that guests add it to their portion on the plate themselves.

Homemade fried onions recipe

For deep frying, it's best to use refined coconut oil or avocado oil, which remain stable at high temperatures.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium onions,
  • 3 tablespoons of flour,
  • oil for frying.

Instructions:

  1. Cut the onions into rings and coat them in two tablespoons of flour.
  2. Place them in a pan with heated oil and fry over medium heat until they start to brown.
  3. Then sprinkle them with another tablespoon of flour, mix, and fry for another 15-20 minutes.
  4. Stir the onions several times during frying.

If you want to prepare fried onions in the oven, toss the flour-coated rings with oil and spread them on baking paper. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius until they reach the desired crispiness. Stir the onions every few minutes to brown them evenly.
