Travellers using UK airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton should remain vigilant. The police are cautioning about a new scam targeting passengers shortly after their arrival. Scammers impersonate airport staff or drivers, offering fake transportation services.

The scammers often wear smart clothing, carry briefcases or signs, and sometimes even have fake IDs. They claim that the transport booked by the tourist has been cancelled or changed, offering immediate transport for a high, cash-only fee.

These scams most frequently occur at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton airports.

The number of scams has significantly increased

According to data from Ski Vertigo, the number of scams related to fake airport transfers has increased by 23% over the past year. Scammers target long-haul passengers, especially those arriving late at night or those unsure about their travel plans.

To avoid being scammed, travellers should use authorised transportation services or apps like Uber or Bolt. It is important not to share travel details with strangers and to pay by card or through an app.

Ski Vertigo emphasises that arranging airport transfers in advance and being aware of procedures can protect against scams. It is also advisable to consult information points at the airport or directly with your accommodation provider.
