The Trump administration is reportedly planning to revoke the temporary residency permits for 240,000 Ukrainian refugees. This information comes from Reuters, citing a high-ranking official within the American administration.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt wrote on platform X that a decision on this matter has not yet been made.

"This is more fake news from Reuters based on anonymous sources who have no idea what they are talking about," she emphasised.

Revoking protection for Ukrainian refugees would mark a significant shift from the former president, Joe Biden's policy. Trump intends to eliminate the possibility of temporary residency in the USA for about 1.8 million migrants altogether. According to documents seen by Reuters, once protection is withdrawn, the migrants could face swift deportation.

Trump signs decrees

Among the decrees signed by Trump following his inauguration was an order to dismantle the temporary humanitarian protection programmes introduced by Biden. These programmes not only covered Ukrainians but also included 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, as well as over 70,000 Afghans.

Just before leaving office, Biden had extended the protection programme for Ukrainian refugees, which was supposed to remain in effect until October 2026. The Ukrainian Embassy in the USA has yet to comment on these reports. Trump's decisions could significantly impact the lives of many people seeking refuge in the United States.
