President Donald Trump’s administration has decided to revoke the protective status of 300,000 Venezuelan refugees, which could lead to their deportation from the US. According to The New York Times, this decision affects individuals who obtained Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in 2023. This status shields them from deportation due to the dangers in their country of origin.
The Trump administration's decision means that starting in April, these Venezuelans will be residing in the US illegally, which would allow for their deportation. "The New York Times" emphasises that the decision does not include another 250,000 Venezuelans whose TPS status remains valid until September.
Kristi Noem, head of the Department of Homeland Security, signed the decision. It was justified by the statement that refugee protection does not serve the national interest of the United States. This move came after President Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, visited Venezuela.
Negotiations with Venezuela
Grenell met with Venezuelan authorities to negotiate the release of detained Americans and ensure the acceptance of flights carrying deported migrants. This is another step by the Trump administration against refugees following the suspension of programmes for Afghans and Ukrainians.
According to The New York Times, immigrant groups anticipated the decision, which could become the subject of legal disputes. Immigration lawyer Marcin Muszyński from New York observed an increase in anxiety among refugees from Venezuela and Ukraine, which he considered justified.
