During a meeting concerning the organisation of next year's World Cup in football, US President Donald Trump stated that excluding Russia from the G8 group was a mistake. He suggested that perhaps the ongoing conflict in Ukraine might have been avoided had that decision not been made. Nevertheless, Trump emphasised that now is not the appropriate time for Russia to return to the G7.

Trump also referred to discussions between his envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Vladimir Putin. He stated that as a result of these negotiations, Russia abandoned plans to take over the entire Ukraine. "What Russia wants is all of Ukraine. And if I didn’t get involved, they would be fighting right now for all of Ukraine," said Trump.

The World Cup as motivation

When asked about Russia's exclusion from the World Cup, Trump admitted he was not aware of it but suggested that Russia's return to the games could serve as motivation to end the war. A similar stance was taken by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who announced that after the conflict ends, Russia will be allowed to return to the organisation.

Despite tensions with Canada and Mexico, Trump assured that all countries are fully cooperating in organising the World Cup. He emphasised that he had a "very good call" with Canada's Prime Minister, Mark Carney, and assessed that their relations would be great.

Security and visas for fans

The Head of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, assured that American services will expedite the issuing of visas for fans visiting the US. Vice President J.D. Vance added that while fans are welcome, they should return to their countries after the event, suggesting that failure to do so may result in deportation.

In conclusion, Trump announced that Andrew Giuliani, son of the former mayor of New York and Trump's former lawyer, will become the head of the task force for organising the World Cup. This marks another step in preparations for this major sporting event.
