What you need to know

  • Attack on Sumy: Donald Trump remarked that the attack on Sumy was due to a Russian error.
  • Biden's War: Trump emphasised that the war in Ukraine is Joe Biden's responsibility, not his own.
  • Meeting with Putin: US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Vladimir Putin, though the details of their conversation have not been disclosed.

How does Trump assess the situation in Ukraine?

Trump mentioned the missile attack on Sumy while aboard Air Force One, returning from Florida to Washington.

- I think it was terrible. And I was told they made a mistake. But I think it's a horrible thing. I think the whole war is a horrible thing. I think for that war to have started is an abuse of power. That war is a shame - said Trump, emphasising that if he were president, "this country would have never allowed that war to have started."

When pressed to clarify his comments regarding the Russian error, the president simply stated that the Russians "made a mistake."

Is the war in Ukraine Biden's fault?

- They made a mistake. I believe it was. Look, you're gonna ask them. This is Biden's war. This is not my war (...). I’m just trying to get it stopped so that we can save a lot of lives - he pointed out. - (M)illions of people would be alive except for the fact that the election were rigged because that war would have never started and (Russian President Vladimir) Putin never would have started that war - he added.

Trump hinted that Putin chose to invade Ukraine due to a lack of respect for Biden.

In discussing the meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin, Trump noted that the talks concerned Russia and Ukraine, but specifics were not revealed. Earlier, Gen. Keith Kellogg, envoy for Ukraine, condemned the attack on Sumy, describing it as a breach of all decency.
