Trump calls for dialogue with Putin amid Ukraine tensions

The President of the USA has officially confirmed that he discussed Ukraine with Vladimir Putin. The American leader concurred with the Russian figurehead that the Ukrainian presidential elections could be a precondition for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

Journalists asked Volodymyr Zelenskyy about these remarks. The Ukrainian president acknowledged that elections are important, though not the most crucial aspect.

The Ukrainian president stated that he had discussed the issue with Donald Trump, making it clear that Ukraine remains his top priority amid the ongoing war. He acknowledged Trump's willingness to engage in dialogue and emphasized that talks are also a priority for Ukraine at this time.

Zelenskyy added that Ukraine greatly values its strong relationship with the United States. However, he emphasised that Kyiv will adhere to its own priorities.

Zelenskyy stated that he had outlined Ukraine's priorities in three discussions and acknowledged Trump's willingness to engage with Russia. While Ukraine has no objection to such talks, he noted that it remains concerning, given the clear distinction between the aggressor and the victim. He added that discussions could extend to other topics, including North Korea.

The President of Ukraine highlighted that these priorities include defending its territories and Ukraine's pursuit of joining the European Union. He also mentioned that Donald Trump knows the Ukrainian army can be self-defenced.

The Ukrainian leader highlighted that Trump was impressed by Ukraine's defense capabilities, particularly its advanced drone systems, which he claimed surpass those of Iran. He emphasized that this is a shared strategic interest with the United States, as both nations seek to counter Russia and its ally, Iran. He concluded that this cooperation benefits the U.S. as well.
