US President Donald Trump announced in Abu Dhabi that he is concluding his trip to the Middle East and returning to the United States. Earlier, there was speculation that he might travel to Turkey to participate in Ukrainian-Russian peace talks. However, this did not happen. Now, Trump has announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as it can be organised.

Trump commented on the discussions in Istanbul, noting that the outcome of the situation between Russia and Ukraine remains to be seen.

On Friday, the foreign ministers of Turkey, Ukraine, and the USA began talks in Istanbul at 7:00 GMT. The meeting includes Hakan Fidan, Andriy Sibihy, and Marco Rubio. The negotiations are aimed at discussing the situation between Ukraine and Russia.

Criticism of the Russian delegation's composition

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticised the composition of the Russian delegation, emphasising that only a direct conversation between Trump and Putin could bring a breakthrough in the talks.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed similar criticism. Rutte said Russian leader Vladimir Putin made a big mistake by sending a low-level delegation to Istanbul for talks with Ukraine.

The Secretary noted that Putin is now under full pressure, as he is facing significant difficulties. Rutte pointed out that while Ukraine dispatched a delegation to Turkey with a mandate to negotiate a ceasefire, Russia failed to do the same.
