Trump's proposal to annex Canada raises sovereignty debate
Donald Trump has once again floated the idea of annexing Canada to the United States. Trump claimed that if Canada were the 51st state of the USA, it could benefit from the protection provided by the so-called Golden Dome for free. Otherwise, it would have to pay.
Last week Donald Trump unveiled the "Golden Dome" project, a new missile defence system with sensors and missiles in space. The system is estimated to cost $175 (£130) billion.
On Tuesday, Trump dedicated a post to this project on the platform truthsocial.com. According to him, Canada has expressed interest in participating in the construction of this system.
"I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars (£45 billion) if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State" - Trump stated.
According to him, the authorities in Ottawa are "considering the offer," although earlier Canadian politicians have repeatedly rejected Trump's absurd demands, emphasising the country's independence and sovereignty.
"Golden Dome". There are doubts
Although Trump assures almost 100 percent effectiveness of the system, not everyone is convinced of its feasibility.
Senator Tim Sheehy believes the cost could reach trillions of dollars, and Gen. Glen VanHerck estimates the implementation time at 5-10 years.
Though a detailed plan for the shield has not been presented, Trump, along with Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and Space Force General Michael Guetlein, who was chosen to lead the project, mentioned that the new shield, named "Golden Dome" by Trump, is to be multi-layered, based on open architecture, integrated with existing systems, and built by many corporations.
