What do you need to know?

  • Donald Trump threatened Mexico with sanctions and tariffs if it does not stop violating the 1944 water treaty, obliging Mexico to deliver water to Texas.
  • Mexico is obliged to deliver approximately 2.2 billion cubic metres of water from the Rio Grande to the USA in five-year cycles, which is crucial for the Texan citrus industry.
  • Senator Ted Cruz is actively working to enforce the treaty, emphasising that the lack of water is a "man-made crisis."

What are the consequences for Mexico?

Donald Trump warned Mexico that if it does not start complying with the 1944 water treaty, sanctions and tariffs may be imposed. This treaty requires Mexico to deliver water to Texas, which is crucial for local farmers. Trump highlighted that Mexico is "stealing" water, negatively impacting Texan farmers.

Why is water so important for Texas?

Water from Mexico is essential for the Texan citrus industry, which is the third largest in the USA, after California and Florida. Prolonged droughts in the region further worsen the situation, making water deliveries even more crucial. Trump also pointed to Senator Ted Cruz, who leads the fight for water and emphasises that it is a "man-made crisis."

The American president also used the post to attack Joe Biden, writing that he "refused to lift a finger to help the Farmers."

What actions is the Trump administration taking?

The Trump administration, including Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, is taking steps to force Mexico to comply with the treaty. Trump announced that he would escalate actions, including the introduction of tariffs and sanctions, if Mexico does not start delivering water according to the agreement. Last month, the USA refused Mexico a special water delivery to Tijuana, which was the first such instance.
