What do you need to know?

  • Donald Trump announced that Iranian centrifuges for uranium enrichment could be destroyed based on the advancements in nuclear agreement negotiations.
  • The USA and Iran are planning another round of discussions on the nuclear programme, scheduled for this coming weekend, with Oman serving as a mediator.
  • US Vice President J.D. Vance stressed that the new agreement must be more stringent than the previous one to effectively prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

What are the options for Iranian centrifuges?

In a radio interview, the President of the USA, Donald Trump, mentioned that Iranian centrifuges for uranium enrichment could be destroyed "mildly" under a new nuclear agreement or "brutally" if no deal is reached. "I would much prefer a strong, verified deal where we actually blow them up, but blow them up or just de-nuke them," Trump emphasised, adding that the final decision has yet to be made.

Will the new agreement with Iran be more stringent?

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Washington, US Vice President J.D. Vance highlighted that the previous control system was "incredibly weak." "We believe there is an agreement that would truly integrate Iran into the global economy and be very beneficial for the Iranian people, but it would lead to Tehran being completely deprived of the opportunity to develop nuclear weapons," said Vance.

The USA and Iran are gearing up for the fourth round of talks regarding the nuclear programme. This dialogue, which commenced in mid-April, is facilitated by Oman. The objective is to reach an agreement that would constrain Iran’s nuclear activities in return for easing some sanctions.
