Trump's deportation numbers fall short despite promises
Since January, when Donald Trump assumed the office of President of the USA, Mexico has accepted 39,000 deported individuals. This is fewer than in the previous year during Joe Biden's term.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that since the beginning of Donald Trump's presidency in the USA, Mexico has accepted 39,000 people deported from the United States. Of this number, 33,000 are Mexican citizens.
Reuters noted that this number is lower than the previous year when Mexico accepted 52,000 deported individuals during Joe Biden's term.
Decrease in deportations
Compared to the year 2024, the number of deported individuals to Mexico has significantly decreased. In February, March, and April of last year, Mexico accepted 52,000 people deported from the USA.
Despite Donald Trump's announcements of the "largest deportation operation in American history", these numbers do not confirm his declarations. AOL emphasised that Trump's statements were mainly aimed at strengthening his political position and returning to the White House.
Trump's deportation policy
Donald Trump, from the beginning of his presidency, placed a strong emphasis on reducing the number of illegal immigrants in the USA. His administration aims to deport a million people annually, which is an ambitious goal and one that raises much controversy.
"The Washington Post" reports that this ambitious endeavor is generating controversy and presenting significant logistical challenges.
Criticism and challenges
Trump's plan faces criticism from human rights organisations and some federal judges.
According to "The Washington Post", Trump officials created a media spectacle by transferring hundreds of detainees to a prison complex in El Salvador and to the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba.
Many people fear that these actions could violate human rights.
Controversial cases
In recent months, there have been several high-profile deportation cases that have caused public outrage. Federal Judge Terry Doughty raises alarms about the deportation of a two-year-old U.S. citizen without undergoing proper process. Such situations undermine trust in the Trump administration and its immigration policy.
