Trump's pressure on Ukraine undermines US leverage with Russia
According to experts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Trump administration is making a mistake by exerting constant pressure on Ukraine while simultaneously expressing no expectations of Russia in public communications. Analysts believe that this strategy significantly hinders the achievement of an agreement acceptable to Ukraine, Europe, and even the USA.
"The Trump administration has been applying considerable pressure on Ukraine, whose leaders continue to offer concessions and publicly declare their interest in achieving a lasting end to the war. These Trump administration policies are undermining the leverage that the United States needs to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept any peace agreement that is in the interests of the United States, Ukraine, and Europe," writes ISW in its analysis.
Experts remind us that Vladimir Putin has not yet proposed any significant concessions from Russia. Moreover, Kremlin officials continue to repeat absurd demands for the total capitulation of Ukraine and the withdrawal of NATO from Eastern Europe.
US decisions impact Ukraine
The analysis recalled that just in the last few days, the United States halted military aid to Ukraine and ceased sharing intelligence data with Kyiv.
"US policies suspending military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine reduce the leverage US President Donald Trump's needs to achieve his stated policy objective of bringing about an end to the war in Ukraine on acceptable terms, a task that requires increasing pressure on Russia, not Ukraine," concludes ISW.
