Trump's stance on Greenland spurs Danish satisfaction
Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Danish Foreign Minister, expressed satisfaction with Donald Trump's statement recognising Greenland's right to self-determination.
Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the head of Danish diplomacy, expressed his satisfaction on Wednesday with the statement made by US President Donald Trump regarding the recognition of Greenland's right to self-determination. Rasmussen, currently visiting Finland, emphasised that this recognition was a key element of the American leader's speech.
Donald Trump had previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland multiple times, and during his first term from 2017 to 2021, he even proposed to the Danish authorities to purchase the island. In his latest address to the joint houses of Congress, Trump argued that the United States needs Greenland for both national and international security reasons.
We need it really for international, for world security, and I think we're going to get it. One way or the other, we're going to get it - Trump declared. He sought to encourage the residents of Greenland to join the USA. He promised them security, prosperity, and development, which would elevate Greenland to new heights.
Denmark's reaction
Rasmussen reminded that efforts are ongoing to "loosen the relations between Denmark and Greenland." However, he added that he is not certain whether Greenlanders wish to become part of the United States.
Trump's declaration met with various reactions, but for Denmark, the key issue is the recognition of Greenland's right to self-determination, as emphasised by the Danish Foreign Minister.
During the address, Donald Trump repeated practically all the topics that appeared in his inaugural speech for his second term, as well as issues he has been discussing over the past few weeks.
