The U.S. State Department reported that the United States will no longer mediate peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. "We are not going to fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings; that is now between the two parties," stated Tammy Bruce, the department's spokesperson.

What you need to know:

  • The United States has officially relinquished its role in peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, the State Department announced on Friday.
  • The decision was communicated by the department's spokesperson, who emphasised that the U.S. will still assist in achieving peace but "is changing its methodology."

In a Friday statement, the State Department announced that the Trump administration is altering "the methodology of how we contribute" to the peace talks.

It was added that American representatives will no longer "travel the globe" for meetings.

"We are not going to fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings; that is now between the two parties, and now is the time that they need to present and develop concrete ideas about how this conflict is going to end," said U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

The U.S. changes its approach to negotiations

She stated that the previous U.S. administration's plan was to stop talking with Russia for at least three years.

She stressed that the current administration prioritises direct communication, favouring personal, one-on-one, face-to-face interactions.

According to her, other regions of the world require attention. "The Secretary has also made it very clear that while our style will change, the methodology of how we contribute to this will change in that we will not be the mediators," Bruce emphasised regarding the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
