Key information

  • The British military carried out a missile attack simulation modelled on the first night of the invasion of Ukraine.
  • The simulation revealed that several missiles penetrated the defence systems, uncovering weaknesses in the infrastructure.
  • The Ministry of Defence assures that the nation is ready to defend itself alongside NATO allies.

The decision to perform a missile attack simulation originated from the need to assess the country's defensive readiness. However, as it transpired, the outcomes were far from reassuring.

According to ladbible.com, the simulation replicated the attacks that occurred in Ukraine during the initial night of the 2022 invasion. Air Commodore Blythe Crawford, recently retired as commander of the UK Air and Space Warfare Centre, explained that the military utilised a "synthetic environment" to model a potential air attack.

For many years, there was a widespread belief that the rest of the continent provided us with protection from potential threats. However, this perception must shift, as dangers are now emerging within our own borders, Crawford emphasized during his address at the Royal United Services Institute in London.

Simulation results

Crawford highlighted that the simulation results were concerning. While specific details concerning damage were not disclosed, he noted that the simulation reinforced the need to act on this issue. Many of the simulated missiles succeeded in breaching the UK's defences, revealing limitations in the availability of airfields and shelters for aircraft capable of withstanding bomb explosions.

The Ministry of Defence assures that the UK is prepared to defend against any threats, in collaboration with NATO allies.

It was emphasized that our armed forces are equipped with cutting-edge air and missile defense capabilities, including the highly regarded Sea Viper system, according to a report cited by ladbible.com.
