The Ukrainian army successfully downed the rare Russian reconnaissance drone, the Albatros M5. This event occurred on April 2nd, and a video of the incident was shared by the 63rd Independent Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Facebook. According to reports, this is the first confirmed case of shooting down this type of unmanned aerial vehicle.

The Albatros M5, unlike the more commonly used Shahed drones in Russia, is a technologically advanced reconnaissance drone. It serves the Russian army by conducting aerial observations, tracking enemy movements, and transmitting acquired information to allied units, which can then initiate attacks on designated areas.

The Albatros M5 is fitted with visual systems developed with assistance from the Russian company Kaspersky. According to the portals CyberResistance and InformNapalm, Kaspersky provided software that enables automatic detection, selection, and tracking of targets. The drone employs a neural network for real-time identification of individuals and is equipped with night-vision capabilities.

Despite its advanced features, the Albatros M5 drone was shot down by Ukrainian air defence units. The 63rd Brigade emphasised that no technology can shield Russian drones from the decisive actions of Ukrainian defenders.

As shown in the video published on social media, the Ukrainian brigade eliminated the Russian UAV using a drone. This is a common practice on the front line, particularly as drones are more cost-effective than missiles for intercepting aerial threats.
