Ukraine secures $30bn (£22.6bn) US aid in landmark reconstruction deal
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, during a conversation with journalists, revealed that the United States plans to provide Ukraine with $30 billion (£22.6 billion) as part of financial aid. This amount is expected to be part of the American contribution to the newly established Investment Fund for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, as reported by unian.ua.
Zelensky emphasised that the USA has already declared $15 billion (£11.3 billion) for 2025 and another $15 billion for 2026. However, thanks to the new fund, Ukraine might receive the entire sum this year. The president stated that Ukraine would gradually repay its share, in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
New opportunities for American business
Thanks to the signed agreement on natural resources, American businesses have the opportunity to enter the Ukrainian market for the first time. Zelensky emphasised that the agreement is beneficial for both sides as it guarantees the protection of future American investments in Ukraine. The president added that this arrangement establishes a partnership between Ukraine and the United States, and affirmed that they will vigorously defend and uphold this cooperation.
During his conversation with the U.S. president, Zelensky pointed out that certain mineral resources are situated near Pokrovsk. He also recalled Trump assuring him—with what he described as a very serious guarantee—that Ukraine would not come under attack by Russia.
Key provisions of the agreement
The agreement between the USA and Ukraine includes several key provisions:
- Full ownership and control over natural resources remain in the hands of Ukraine.
- The partnership between the USA and Ukraine is equal.
- National ownership is protected.
- No debt obligations.
On 1st May, it was announced that the USA and Ukraine signed an agreement regarding mineral resources. As reported by the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yuliia Svyrydenko, Kyiv and Washington will establish the Investment Fund for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, which is aimed at attracting global investments. The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, added that the fund will be registered in the USA, and its currency will be the hryvnia.
