Ukraine turns to Russian assets for reconstruction funding
The authorities in Kyiv are exploring ways to secure resources for the country's reconstruction. One proposal is to use Russian funds for this purpose. Ukraine intends to impose special tariffs on imports of Russian goods following the war.
The revenue generated from imposing tariffs on Russian goods would be channelled into Ukraine's reconstruction fund. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal explained that this would be "an economic mechanism for reparations that allows for action without having to wait for political changes in Russia."
The current authorities in the Kremlin consistently reject the possibility of paying any compensation to Ukraine for the damages sustained during the war.
Ukraine seeks to seize Russian money as a form of reparation
Moreover, Ukraine is persisting in its efforts to fully confiscate frozen Russian assets as reparations.
The Prime Minister of Ukraine announced that the country has already seized $50 billion (£37 billion) from frozen Russian assets. These funds, he added, are being utilised for budgetary needs, military expenses, and repairing damaged infrastructure. Ukraine's ultimate aim is the complete confiscation of these funds.
