Ukraine's prospective NATO path tops Paris summit agenda
The Guardian reported on the topics European leaders are expected to discuss during the summit in Paris. The meeting will be held among key European countries.
At Monday's meeting in Paris, leaders from Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark, along with the President of the European Commission and the Secretary General of NATO, are set to discuss the potential membership of Ukraine in NATO.
This involves the possibility of Ukraine automatically gaining membership in the Alliance if Russia violates a ceasefire, should one be agreed upon.
This proposal, supported by some American senators, has gained backing from certain European leaders, including Finland's President, Alexander Stubb, reports The Guardian.
The summit is also expected to discuss the defensive capabilities that Europe could provide to Ukraine as part of security guarantees. The Finnish president emphasised that Ukraine must be guaranteed independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The meeting in Paris was organised following the Munich Security Conference, where the USA announced negotiations with Russia.
Before departing for Paris, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that he would urge other leaders to make decisions regarding the defence capabilities of the EU and its member states. He also stressed that Europe could provide Ukraine with genuine security guarantees only when it is militarily stronger than Russia.
