Ukraine's sea baby drones turn hunters into the hunted

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has disclosed details of an operation using the Ukrainian "Sea Baby" maritime drones. These drones have demonstrated their capabilities by damaging Russian helicopters, aeroplanes, and patrol boats, as well as striking a barge transporting military equipment and bridge repair materials in Crimea.

"During the night of 5-6 December, the SBU Sea Baby drone group engaged in a confrontation with Russian helicopters, aeroplanes, and Raptor patrol boats attempting to intercept them. (...) The Russian pilots considered themselves the hunters, expecting an easy target, but they became the prey when the maritime drones retaliated," the statement revealed.

In addition to the statement, a striking video of the clash between Ukrainian Sea Baby drones and Russian forces was shared on social media.

The SBU reported that Sea Baby drones were equipped with large-calibre machine guns using automatic targeting and identification programs. They also targeted a barge carrying military equipment and repair devices for the Crimean bridge, which the Russians are trying to reconstruct following attacks by Ukrainian special forces.

"Intercepted Russian radio communications suggest there are casualties and injuries aboard the helicopters. The helicopters have been severely damaged and now require substantial repairs," the SBU stated.

Sea Baby drones: A menace for Russians

The Sea Baby platform is versatile and can be equipped with various weapons, including multiple-launch rocket systems, flying drones, and large-calibre machine guns. The SBU has once again proven its effectiveness against the invaders.

Sea Baby drones have been operational for many months and are regarded as one of the most formidable threats to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Equipped with daylight and thermal imaging cameras, the drones are continuously upgraded, with new versions offering even greater capabilities. According to Karolina Modzelewska, a journalist for Wirtualna Polska, the new version of the Sea Baby, unveiled in March of this year, has enhanced technical specifications, combat capabilities, and manoeuvrability. It can operate within a range of approximately 1,000 kilometres and carry up to 1,000 kilograms of explosives.
