According to a report by German security authorities, drones appeared on 3rd and 4th December over the U.S. Armed Forces territory, which plays a key role as a military hub in Europe.

Drones of unidentified origin were also seen over facilities of the defence company Rheinmetall and the chemical giant BASF.

The spokesperson for the Ramstein base confirmed that several small, unmanned aerial systems were observed in early December. However, she emphasised that they did not affect the base residents or military equipment.

Response of German authorities

German security agencies and politicians have been dealing with the issue of possible espionage flights for months. This topic was discussed at the conference of interior ministers from the federal government and the federal states, which took place last week at 16:00 GMT. Nevertheless, participants did not reach an agreement on counteracting such incidents.

"Der Spiegel" emphasises that the situation is being monitored, and German authorities are trying to determine who is behind these flights. However, there are still no concrete findings regarding the origin of the drones. These events raise concern, especially in the context of the security of strategic sites in Germany.
