The White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, announced on social media that 538 illegal immigrants have been apprehended. The US Congress has enacted legislation that allows for the arrest and deportation of individuals suspected of legal infractions.

"The Trump Administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals," wrote Leavitt, adding that several hundred were deported via military aircraft. "The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept," she added.

New regulations and their consequences

The issue of illegal migration was a central theme of Trump's election campaign. Among the initial decisions of the new president was the suspension of asylum rights. Tom Homan, responsible for deportations, stated that the priority is individuals convicted of crimes, but other illegal immigrants will also be detained. "ICE is performing excellent right now out in the field, and they're gonna continue every day," assured Homan.

Not only illegal immigrants were detained

Reuters reported that during a raid in Newark, New Jersey, not only illegal immigrants were detained but also US citizens. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka stated that "one of the detainees is a U.S. military veteran, who suffered the indignity of having the legitimacy of his military documentation questioned." Baraka emphasized that "Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorised."
