USS Preble, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, is the first ship in the US fleet to be fitted with the HELIOS system. This advanced laser weapon integrates the abilities to destroy targets and obstruct enemy systems. HELIOS is a solution developed by Lockheed Martin and is a component of the US Navy's strategy for integrating advanced energy technologies.

HELIOS: a breakthrough in defence technology

HELIOS, which stands for High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance, is a system that provides both 'hard kill' and 'soft kill' capabilities. This means it can physically destroy targets ("hard kill") and disrupt their operation ("soft kill"). According to the Bulgarian Military portal, this system is particularly effective against drones, small boats, and potentially incoming missiles.

The development of the HELIOS system began in 2018 with a contract valued at 150 million dollars with Lockheed Martin. The system underwent vital testing in 2020, and its integration on the USS Preble commenced in 2021. HELIOS operates at a power of 60 kW but can be increased to 120 kW, providing adaptability in various operational scenarios.

Global competition in laser weaponry

It's not only the USA investing in laser weaponry. The UK is developing its DragonFire system, and Israel is working on the Iron Beam. China, Russia, Germany, and other countries are also engaged in the development of this technology. Each of these nations has its unique approach and strategic objectives.

The UK has accelerated the development of DragonFire, with plans for its completion by 2027. With US assistance, Israel is developing Iron Beam, which is intended to be a more cost-effective alternative to traditional missile defence systems. Additionally, China claims to have developed a laser system capable of continuous operation due to an innovative cooling system.

It's worth noting that the USS Preble is an Arleigh Burke-class ship, measuring approximately 155 metres in length and with a displacement of about 10,300 tonnes. It achieves speeds of nearly 59 km/h and is equipped with a variety of navigational and reconnaissance radars. The weaponry on this vessel includes a 127 mm gun, a 20 mm Phalanx CIWS system, 25 mm machine guns, and the aforementioned HELIOS laser.
