US‑Ukraine rare Earth deal: Zelensky demands revisions

The draft agreement regarding rare earth minerals, recently revised by the United States, has not been well-received by Kyiv. Discussions have already occurred on this issue, and Washington has reportedly shown understanding for Ukraine's concerns.

According to Bloomberg, a video call between Ukrainian representatives and the American side was scheduled for Friday. The topic was the draft agreement on rare earth metals that had been re-submitted. Kyiv again reportedly reacted critically to the provisions in the document. According to the agency, Washington is said to have responded positively to Kyiv's concerns.

The authors suggest this may indicate Washington's openness to discussing changes to the draft.

Bloomberg believes Ukraine will request the United States to amend the new economic agreement proposed by the Trump administration. This is particularly in regard to the promise of increased American investments in the country.

Those expected to participate in the talks include lawyers, among others.

Zelensky opposes the agreement in the proposed form

On Friday evening, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, commented on the agreement, stating unambiguously that he would not allow the signing of an agreement in a form that would hinder Ukraine's efforts to join the European Union.

The President emphasised that "the Constitution of Ukraine clearly sets the course for the European Union," and the country is actively working towards this goal. "Very important reforms and necessary steps are being implemented," Zelensky said.
