Venice pioneers day visitor levy to combat over-tourism
Venice will introduce an entry fee of 5 to 10 euros per person in 2025. This additional charge will apply to tourists who do not stay overnight. Venice is the first city in the world to implement such a levy.
As the first city globally to introduce an entry fee, Venice aims to reduce the impact of day tourism, which involves short visits without an overnight stay.
The fee will be applicable for visits between 7.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. GMT. The price will vary, with this year’s rate set at 5 euros. Visitors who pay at least four days in advance will also be charged 5 euros in 2025. Fees will increase to 10 euros for last-minute payments. Children under 14 years old are exempt from the charge.
Fees for tourists in Venice
During the initial phase, the entry ticket and registration of arrival will be required between 18 April and 4 May, coinciding with high travel periods such as Liberation Day on 25 April and Labour Day. It will further apply every weekend in May, June, and July, as well as on 2 June for Republic Day.
In 2024, this requirement was enforced over 29 days during the spring and summer, but next year the duration will nearly double.
The city authorities are addressing the increasingly serious problem of over-tourism in Venice. Furthermore, the city council has ruled that tourist apartments in the historic centre may be rented out for 120 days a year.
