The washing machine is one of the most frequently used appliances in the home. Regular cleaning of its interior is essential to avoid problems such as unpleasant odours emanating from the drum. The most common cause of this is mould, which develops in hard-to-reach places such as the seal, detergent drawer, or filter. Regularly maintaining the hygiene of the appliance not only extends its lifespan but also ensures your clothes will always smell fresh.

All you need is vinegar and water. Your washing machine will shine

Vinegar and baking soda are currently the most popular home alternatives to professional cleaning agents. Baking soda effectively combats limescale, absorbs unpleasant odours, and tackles bacteria. Meanwhile, vinegar is excellent for dealing with fungi and mould, which can develop in the washing machine. When combined, these two products enhance their effectiveness and can be used to clean many elements throughout the home.

To clean the washing machine, add baking soda to the detergent compartment, filling it halfway. Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the fabric softener compartment. Then run the washing machine empty, selecting the highest possible temperature. Once the cycle is complete, open the door to allow the drum to dry. Repeat this process once a month, and unpleasant odours will be a thing of the past.

Don't forget the rubber seal and detergent drawer

Mould can also develop in the washing machine's rubber seal. To prevent this, wipe the rubber with a solution of dishwashing liquid and warm water, then dry it with a clean, dry cloth. Remember to dry the inside of the seal with a paper towel after each wash.

Don't overlook the detergent drawer during cleaning. Remove it from the washing machine and rinse it thoroughly under running water. If there is any dirt or dried detergent, remove it with an unused toothbrush. Finally, ensure the drawer is thoroughly dry before putting it back in place.
