Voice of a generation: John Erwin's legacy in animation
John Erwin, who voiced He-Man in popular 1980s cartoons and Morris the Cat in the 9Lives cat food commercials, passed away from natural causes at the age of 88 in Camarillo, California.
The actor was active in the world of cartoons for many years, playing various characters, including He-Man in the series "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" and "She-Ra: Princess of Power", which aired from 1983 to 1986. Both productions enjoyed massive popularity in the United States and the United Kingdom despite modest budgets, notes the "Mirror".
Erwin was also featured in numerous commercials, and his voice was recognised by anyone who watched the 9Lives cat food adverts, where he appeared as Morris the Cat. This role made him one of the most recognisable voices in the USA.
The actor had a prosperous career that spanned over 45 years. His most recent acclaimed role was in an episode of "Family Guy," where he once again played He-Man when the character appeared in a scene with Brian Griffin.
Erwin’s career began in 1968 when he voiced one of his first roles—grumpy Reggie Mantle in the series "The Archies." His vocal talent caught the attention of commercial producers, leading to the role of Morris, who became the symbol of the 9Lives brand.
Remembering working with John Erwin
Alan Oppenheimer, who provided the voice of Skeletor in "He-Man," fondly remembers John Erwin.
Working with John Erwin was a ballad of irreverence, professionalism and surprise. He was a series actor, writer, performer of commercials, musician, painter and an all-around lovely gentleman, an indelible addition to my life, said Oppenheimer, quoted by the "Mirror".
Erwin passed away on 20 December 2024, but the sad news was only confirmed by his agent on Friday (31 January GMT). He is survived by a loving family—children and grandchildren.
