Wool bread is a must-have for the Easter table. Since I discovered this recipe, I've been baking it regularly. It is fluffy and light, tasting great with a glass of milk, cocoa, or a cup of hot coffee. It's a delicious alternative to the classic yeast cake and sand cake.

Wool bread

"Wool bread" is a loaf that has gained immense popularity online due to its eye-catching spiral appearance resembling a ball of yarn. It immediately draws attention, and upon tasting, it proves that its merits aren't just visual. Making wool bread is quite straightforward, so any home baking enthusiast can manage it.

This dessert can be a culinary chameleon. You can prepare it sweet by adding raisins, chocolate pieces, or jam for a filling. Alternatively, you can opt for a savoury version and fill it with pesto or incorporate a festive touch like white sausage. The structure is quite pliable, allowing for various fillings. If you choose the savoury option, reduce the sugar in the dough.

Ingredients:

  • 300-350g all-purpose flour,
  • 1.4 tsp dried yeast,
  • 40g sugar,
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar,
  • 70ml double cream,
  • 1 egg,
  • a pinch of salt.

Instructions:

  1. Add yeast to warm milk and set aside for a few minutes. The dried yeast won't rise, but it should become somewhat frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, white sugar, vanilla sugar, and a generous pinch of salt.
  3. Add the egg, cream, and yeast, then knead into a smooth, elastic dough.
  4. Cover with a cloth and let rise for 1.5 hours until it doubles in size.
  5. Transfer the dough to a board and divide it into 5 parts. Form them into balls and let rise for 10 minutes.
  6. Roll each piece into a rectangle and cut into strips two-thirds of the way through.
  7. Roll into a log, starting from the uncut side and rolling towards the cut strips. If stuffing, add the filling to the uncut part before rolling.
  8. Tightly arrange the rolled pieces into a round shape in a springform pan.
  9. Cover and let rise again for 1-2 hours.
  10. Brush with milk and bake in an oven preheated to 180°C for about 25 minutes until golden brown.

Wool bread will make for a beautiful and delicious decoration for the table. Enjoy!
