Controversies surrounding the ceasefire
The Kremlin announced a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine from 7th to 10th May to help ensure safety during the celebrations. Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed willingness to suspend fighting, but for 30 days instead. He emphasised that three days is not enough. This proposal was rejected by Putin. Zelensky underlined that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign dignitaries during their visit to Moscow due to the ongoing war.
In recent years, China and Russia have strengthened their economic, military, and political ties. The Communist authorities of China have not condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Xi Jinping's visit to Russia is another step in strengthening this partnership.
