Xi urges trade dialogue amid Trump’s inaugural overture
The leader of China wrote a letter to the US-China Business Council (USCBC). Xi Jinping stated that economic and trade disputes harm both parties, and therefore it is necessary to "choose dialogue over confrontation, and win-win cooperation over zero-sum games."
Xi Jinping's letter was sent on the occasion of the annual USCBC gala, which took place on 11 December. The US-China Business Council is a private non-profit organisation registered in the USA, bringing together over 270 American companies operating in China.
According to Xi Jinping, China's relations with the USA are "one of the most important relationships in the world [and] it concerns not only the immediate interests of the Chinese and American peoples, but also the future of and destiny of the entire humanity."
He emphasised that in bilateral relations, one should "choose dialogue over confrontation, and win-win cooperation over zero-sum games."
Beijing sends a signal to the USA. Trump responds with an invitation
CBS News reports that US President-elect Donald Trump invited Xi Jinping to his presidential inauguration, which will take place on 20 January in Washington D.C. However, it is unclear whether the Chinese leader has accepted the invitation.
Xi Jinping last visited the USA in November 2023, attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Community summit in San Francisco, where he met with President Joe Biden.
The last meeting with Trump took place in June 2019 during the G20 summit in Japan.
