President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Brussels to attend the special session of the European Council. According to the president's spokesperson, Serhiy Nikiforov, Zelensky will meet there with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
During his visit to Brussels, the Ukrainian leader also plans to meet with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, European Council President Charles Michel, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He will also have an audience with the King of the Belgians, Philippe.
On Thursday, an extraordinary summit of heads of state and government will be held in Brussels. During the summit, the United States will discuss changing its approach to Russian aggression in Ukraine. Since the last meeting of the "27" leaders, which took place on February 3rd, Washington has begun talks with Moscow without the participation of Kyiv and its European allies and announced the suspension of military aid to Ukraine.
Zelensky's visit to Brussels aims to strengthen cooperation with European partners and discuss the current geopolitical situation. Meetings with key NATO and EU leaders are crucial to Ukraine's strategy in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Extraordinary summit in Brussels
Representatives from all European Union countries will attend the extraordinary summit in Brussels. Topics to be discussed include the unique plan for rearming Europe and peace in Ukraine.
BBC analysts emphasise that "opposition can be expected from some European leaders sympathetic to Moscow." Recent comments from Orban suggest this, as he has expressed a desire for Ukraine to be omitted from any written conclusions after the summit.
