Since Tuesday, Southern California, including the Los Angeles area, has been struggling with massive fires.
The fires engulfing Los Angeles have been exacerbated by unfavourable weather conditions, including strong Santa Ana winds that are spreading the flames. It is already known that at least 10 people have died, and nearly 200,000 residents have had to evacuate.
The fire, near where the arrest occurred, broke out on Thursday afternoon. It is not yet known if it was arson or if the detained man will face any charges.
Malfunctions before the outbreak of fires
The Los Angeles Times website reported that the company Whisker Labs, which monitors electrical activity, recorded a sharp increase in the number of malfunctions a few hours before the fire broke out. It was emphasised that it was similar before Tuesday's fire outbreak in the Pacific Palisades area, when the area was already engulfed by strong winds.
Malfunctions in the power grid can be caused by tree branches striking wires or wires striking each other. Each such malfunction can generate a spark. Bob Marshall, head of Whisker Labs, noted that it is not possible to definitively determine whether these malfunctions were the cause of the fires.
The blaze ravages LA
Three of the five largest fires, including the largest Palisades fire, remain uncontained. This area, located between Santa Monica and Malibu, in the northern part of Los Angeles, is known for some of the most expensive real estate in the country.
The scale of the tragedy in Los Angeles has surprised both residents and authorities. The fast-moving fires spread exceptionally quickly, destroying everything in their path. Although numerous rescue efforts have been made, many people remain in difficult situations, and the economic and social impacts will be felt long after the flames are extinguished.
