Many of us instinctively reach for warmth to deal with a frozen lock, but it's important to remember that not all methods are safe. A common mistake is pouring boiling water over the lock or using a lighter to heat it, which can lead to damage. However, there are more effective and less risky solutions that can truly help in such a situation.

Freezing nights can leave a car parked outdoors, without the cover of a garage, greeting us with frozen locks. Here are a few methods that might prove helpful.

An unfailing solution is using a de-icer, available at any petrol station for a small sum. This preparation is useful not only for locks but also for frozen door seals. If you find yourself without de-icer, you can use WD-40 – it can be helpful in emergencies.

One of the better methods involves heating the lock with warm air. Forget about fire – the best option is using a hairdryer, which will effectively melt the ice. Even your breath can help, though it does require more time.

Trying to force the key in is a bad idea, as it can damage the mechanism. Check your pockets for hand sanitiser gel, which contains alcohol capable of quickly dissolving the ice. Simply apply a little on the key; after a moment, the key should slide in easily.

How to prevent frozen locks? It’s a good idea to park your car in a sunny spot, so that moisture and ice have a chance to melt. Investing in anti-ice preparations and special protective mats can also be beneficial. This way, you can protect your car from frost and ice, and the lock is less likely to freeze. Once again, it’s worth considering purchasing a de-icer just in case.
