It incorporates apples, onions, celery, and potatoes, common in vegetable salads, alongside herring, pickles, and beets, providing a completely new and unique flavour profile. Each bite is bursting with flavour, which complements rather than competes with one another to create a cohesive dish.

The salad's main ingredient is herring, which, when combined with red beets, potatoes, pickles, and apples, creates an extraordinary flavour composition. All of this is enveloped in a creamy sour cream and mustard sauce, giving the dish a unique aroma. The salad looks visually appealing in the bowl, and the herring is not overpowering in smell.

Lviv salad is an exceptional traditional dish originating from Ukrainian cuisine. Thanks to its intense flavour and rich ingredients, it makes an excellent snack for parties or family events. Ingredients:

                                  
  • 6-8 herring fillets in oil
  • 4-6 large beets
  • 4 potatoes
  • 6-7 pickles
  • 4-6 apples
  • 1 medium-sized onion
  • celery
  • 1 jar of pickled mushrooms

Sauce:

              
  • Approximately 500ml of sour cream
  • 1 jar of Russian mustard
  • Sugar, salt, and pepper to taste

Instructions:

                              
  1. Boil the potatoes, beets, and celery in their skins until they are soft. A fork should pierce the skin easily.
  2. Then peel and dice them.
  3. Peel and dice the apples as well. Do the same with the herring.
  4. Chop the mushrooms and onion into smaller pieces.
  5. Transfer all ingredients to a large bowl, drizzle with oil, and let sit overnight so the flavours can meld.
  6. Mix the sour cream well with the mustard, season with salt and sugar, and pour over the salad.
  7. Mix thoroughly so the sauce coats all the ingredients. If necessary, season with extra salt, pepper, or sugar.
