The Icelandic Meteorological Institute reported that the eruption created a fissure between 2.4 and 3.2 kilometres in length. The explosion was preceded by a series of minor earthquakes, indicating increased seismic activity in the region.
Another volcano eruption on the peninsula
This is already the tenth volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021, with the previous one occurring at the end of August this year.
Due to the threat, about 60 people were evacuated from the town of Grindavik. Most residents did not return after earlier damage caused by lava. The town, currently secured with a protective barrier, was only reopened in October.
The nearby geothermal waters spa with the Blue Lagoon Hotel, popular among tourists, has also been evacuated and closed. However, the operator of Keflavik International Airport, Isavia, announced that the volcanic eruption did not affect air traffic, and flights are proceeding as scheduled.
