Kathy Bates's Golden Globes snub: A farewell twist?

Kathy Bates is one of the finest actresses, an Oscar winner, and a two-time Golden Globe recipient. She delivered another masterful performance at the latest Globes ceremony when she heard that... she wasn’t the one receiving the award.

Did you know that the peak of Kathy Bates's career and popularity came only at 42? Then, she played her iconic role as the psychopathic fan of a popular writer in the screen adaptation of Stephen King's novel. In "Misery", an injured man wakes up after an accident, not in a hospital bed, but in Annie's home, his devoted fan. It quickly becomes apparent that this is not a safe haven. Every fan of good horror likely shudders at the memory of Kathy Bates standing in the doorway with a hammer.

Although she debuted with Milos Forman, the King adaptation served as a springboard in her career. Then came roles in "Fried Green Tomatoes" and "Titanic". Fans of the series undoubtedly love her acting roles in "American Horror Story" and "The Office". Unfortunately, she recently saddened everyone with the news that she is retiring for a well-deserved rest. Her latest achievement is the legal series "Matlock". It was for her role in this production that she received a Golden Globe nomination. However, she had to do without - the statuette went to Anna Sawai for her performance in the Disney+ series "Shogun." That evening, Disney+ swept the board, winning all the awards in the acting categories and the most important one: for the best drama series.

Kathy Bates did not receive the Golden Globe - this was her reaction

In the category of "best actress in a drama series", alongside Bates and Sawai, the nominees were Emma D’Arcy ("House of the Dragon"), Maya Erskine ("Mr. and Mrs. Smith"), Keira Knightley ("Black Doves"), and Keri Russell ("The Diplomat"). When the verdict was announced from the stage, the camera briefly captured the reactions of all the nominees.

Of course, each actress smiled politely and applauded. However, Kathy Bates soon tore the paper she held in her hands, looking straight into the camera. As one might assume, a scrap of paper was a speech that stars prudently prepare for themselves in case of a win. In this case, it was already useless.

Bates had every right to expect a win. Not only because she is such a great actress but also because this role bids farewell to her acting career. It's worth noting that this theatrical gesture "for the cameras" is a joke from an actress known for her great sense of humour. Maybe this loss will prompt her to postpone retirement.
