Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Ukraine and its allies to pursue diplomatic avenues to end the war with Russia, without abandoning other measures.

In an interview referenced by "Ukrainska Pravda," Angela Merkel underscored that Russia cannot emerge victorious in this conflict.

"This is not only in Ukraine's interest, but also in our own, as we cannot allow Putin to win," stated the former German Chancellor.

Diplomatic solutions

While condemning the Russian invasion as a flagrant breach of international law, she simultaneously emphasised that “diplomatic solutions must always be considered alongside military actions.”

Merkel expressed that diplomatic discussions should occur at an appropriate time, although she did not specify when that would be. She also reaffirmed her support for the German government's efforts in assisting Ukraine, acknowledging that defeating Russia will be challenging for Ukraine.
