Restore your white socks: Clever hacks for stain-free shine

White socks get dirty very easily, and over time, they can become fuzzy, making them look worn out even after washing. Tough stains can be a challenge even for specialised bleaching powders. But before buying a new pair, it's worth trying some home methods to restore them to their original whiteness.

Fabrics in light colours get dirty and yellow quickly, which often leads to the use of expensive detergents or bleaches during washing. An alternative is to use baking soda or vinegar, which are both safe and effective. But there's something else that can help.

How to clean white socks?

Instagram and TikTok are treasure troves of inspiration. In addition to beauty tricks, you'll find tips to make daily tasks easier. It's worth testing the method of one internet user who showed how to clean white socks thoroughly. Put a dirty pair of socks into a tall jar. Then add a laundry detergent pod, a tablespoon of sea salt, and baking soda.

Crush pieces of aluminium foil into small balls and throw them into the jar. Now, cover everything with hot water. Then stir, close the jar, and shake it vigorously. Wait about 10 minutes. After this time, the white socks will be like new, and the stains will disappear.

Not just baking soda and vinegar

To clean white socks, it's worth preparing a rinse that will not only restore their white colour but also disinfect the material. Add two tablespoons of baking soda to a bowl with a litre of warm water—if necessary, you can increase the amount.

Soak the socks for at least 30 minutes, and then wash them in the washing machine. If you don't have baking soda on hand, you can use vinegar. Pour a cup of vinegar into a litre of warm water and soak the socks for half an hour. During washing, the unpleasant vinegar smell will dissipate.

Baking soda and vinegar are eco-friendly whitening solutions. In their absence, use eggshells - even though it sounds unconventional, their whitening properties can yield surprising results. Clean the shells, place them in a laundry bag, and throw them into the washing machine. Once dry, the socks will regain a bright white appearance.
